My copy of Niermayer being snowbound in the midwest, i'm curious as to
how reliable the translation of the usage in this particular charter
might be.
Niermayer is, of course, essentially reliable; but, in the very few times
which I have been able to check on some of his charter sources it seems
to me that he sometimes makes assumptions which are not explicitly born out by
the context of the document itself.
Does he give any further reference to the charter itself --perhaps a specific
date?
The early Cluny charters are on line --more or less-- through the B.N.'s
"Gallica" service:
http://gallica.bnf.fr/
(the site is apparently down at the moment, so a i can't find the more
specific url.)
DuCange, anyone?
best from here,
christopher
