A blast from the past. I remember singing the Mighty Fortress as a child in
the sixties, and recall that it was one of the few that the whole
congregation actually sang instead of mumbled. In high school I discovered
that Martin Luther wrote the words and Bach (a Lutheran) composed the music,
and thought it quite ironic. When I got hold of a missal sometime after my
discovery I found the hymn and noted with a smile that neither the lyricist
nor composer was listed; the attribution merely said "traditional." After
all those years old animosities did not die easily.
