While it is not "a simple, beginner's book", there is of course Hubert
Jedin's _Geschichte des Konzils von Trient_ (partial English translation
under the title _A History of the Council of Trent_) in 5 volumes (!!).
Jedin was one of the people involved in the monumental _Concilium
Tridentinum: Diariorum, actorum, epistularum, tractatuum nova collectio_.
Having worked on this collection, he does a nice job of situating the
conciliar debates within their historical context (if memory serves; it's
been a while since I've worked on anything so late... :)
