I too thought of Do ut des in the context on these bargains with the
saints, not so much as a possible source but simply as another example
of the same human impulse. I can't dredge up any secondary works on
Roman Religion from the remaining tatters of a now long-past classical
education, but it does seem to me that a good primary source for Roman
Religion in action would be Cato's De Re Rustica, in which the
unpleasant old man deals with the proper religious observances on the
farm as well as crops and home remedies.....
