Co-East Seminar Announcement.
Colleagues may be interested in an innovative and imaginative new model for
resource sharing developed by library services in the East of England.
The Co-East project, funded by the DCMS/Wolfson Public Libraries Challenge
Fund 1999/2000, uses Z39.50 and other standard protocols to demonstrate
connectivity and interoperability between three main public library
operating systems across six library authorities in the East of England.
Working in partnership, library authorities, library system suppliers,
content suppliers and an independent technical broker have brought together
all the library resources of the six authorities into a virtual private
network, accessible via web based OPACs and the world wide web to all
library users in the region. The resources available to library users, on a
self service basis, include citizen's information databases, content
databases embracing homework support, over 2700 electronic journals and open
learning programmes. Many of these can be accessed remotely, from home, work
place, school and community centre.
The Co-East partners are: Cambridgeshire County Council, Libraries and
Information Services; Chadwyck-Healey Ltd; DS Group; EBSCO Information
Services; Epixtech; Essex County Council Libraries and Information Service;
Fretwell-Downing Informatics Ltd; Geac Computers Ltd; Peterborough City
Council Libraries; Southend on Sea Borough Libraries; Suffolk County Council
Libraries and Heritage; Thurrock Council, Leisure, Libraries and Cultural
Services.

at the British Library, St Pancras on 17 April 2000 1pm to 6pm.
