Consortium purchase deal for EARL Partners for the Oxford English
Dictionary Online
EARL is pleased to announce that a special agreement has been reached with
Oxford University Press giving EARL Partners a 30-40% discount on the
annual subscription to the Oxford English Dictionary Online. A free one
month trial of the service is also available.
Prices are based on Local Authority population size, and the licence deal
can be extended by separate negotiation to include access by all Local
Authority staff and schools.
In addition, Partners taking out a subscription to OED Online are eligible
for substantial discounts of 55-65% on sets of the 20-volume print edition
of the OED.
ABOUT THE OED
The Oxford English Dictionary - the world's leading authority on the
history and development of the English language since 1150 - will be
available online from March 2000.
In addition to offering unparalleled access to the wealth of material
contained in the 20-volume OED and 3 volumes of Additions, online
publication enables the "treasure house" of the English language to move
with the times as never before possible.
For the first time since it was completed in 1928, the OED is being
completely revised - every word and every sense is being fully updated to
take account of the latest changes in language and scholarship. New
material from the 34 million pound revision programme which began in 1990
will be released quarterly, offering online subscribers a unique
opportunity to chart the course of the English language on an ongoing
basis:
- Search the equivalent of 23 volumes of information with speed and ease
- Find a term when you know the meaning but have forgotten the word
- Find words that have come into English via a particular language
- Search for quotations from a specified year
- Search for all quotations from a particular author and/or work
- Display entries according to your needs - for the first time you can turn
pronunciation, etymologies, variant spellings, and quotations on and off
- Gain unique online access to at least 1,000 new and revised words each
quarter
- Compare revised entries with entries from the Second Edition to see how -
language has changed and how new scholarship has increased understanding of
our linguistic and cultural heritage
- Keep up to date with exciting developments from the world's largest
humanities research project through quarterly online newsletters. For more

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

2. There are 4 price bands based on the population served by each Authority
as recorded in publicly-available figures:

3. Prices stated are for annual network licences covering terminals
throughout the public library network within a subscribing Authority
4. Access is by IP address
5. The OED anticipates that annual subscriptions can start from 1 April
2000
6. Subscriptions may commence at any time and will be invoiced from the
first date of the following month
7. Prices stated apply to subscriptions taken out before 31 March 2001
8. The OED guarantees that the price increase for 2001/2 will not exceed 5%
9. A free trial period of one month is available
10. This special licence deal can be extended to include access by local

11. Subscribing Authorities are eligible for discounts on the 20-volume
print edition of the OED (list price 1800 pounds) as follows:
- 1-2 copy/ies - 800 pounds per set
- 3-5 copies - 700 pounds per set
- 5+ copies - 600 pounds per set
12. The licence will be based on the JISC/Publisher's Association model
licence

develop the role of public libraries in providing networked library and
information services. It has over 160 public library Partners in Local
Authorities, and over 25 Associate Partners from a range of sectors
