The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) and the University of
Zurich invite applications for the position of an
Assistant Professor for Crystalline Geology
The successful candidate will lead a strong research and teaching
program combining geological field investigations of crystalline
rocks with quantitative data from experimental and theoretical
studies of deep earth materials.
The new professor should have a prime interest in the basic physical
and chemical processes of crust/mantle interactions, magma
generation, regional metamorphism and orogenesis. The new professor
is expected to establish a vigorous field-based program dealing with
the petrology of crystalline rocks which includes the Alps and other
areas where crust and mantle rocks are exposed. On the longer term,
the successful candidate is expected to develop a new program in
experimental determination of chemical and physical properties of
rocks, minerals and melts, as a basis for understanding the formation
and the mobility of magmas and crystalline rocks in the Earth's crust
and mantle.
The professor will have overall responsibilities for some of the key
experimental and analytical infrastructure serving the Department as
a whole.
Co-operative teaching at the undergraduate level, and research
collaboration with colleagues at ETH and University Zurich is
encouraged and expected, especially with the fields of tectonics and
rock deformation, solid-earth geophysics, crystallography,
theoretical petrology and geochemistry.
Applicants should submit a detailed curriculum vitae, a statement of
research interests, a list of publications, and the names of three
potential referees to the President of ETH Zurich, Prof. Dr. O.
Kübler, ETH Zentrum, CH-8092 Zürich no later than April 10, 2000. Our
schools specifically encourage female candidates to apply with a view
towards increasing the proportion of female professors.
