I would just like to echo Dick Jacobs statement that the request for
suggestions for a module on "Theorising Disability and Impairment" is
entirely appropriate and, as I understand it, is part of the purpose of
this particular listserve.
Here are a few suggestions:
Simi Linton's recent book "Claiming Disability"
Irving Zola , "Disability Statistics: What We Count And What It Tells
Us: A Personal And Political Analysis," Journal of Disability Policy
Studies, Vol. 4, No. 2, 1991.
Harlan Hahn, "The political implications of disability definitions and
data" - also, I believe, in the Journal of Disability Policy Studies,
but I am not sure which issue. There may also have been an entire issue
devoted to this topic in which various authors responded to each other,
but I am not sure.
Gary Albrecht's chapter "Social Meaning and Intepretation" in his book
"The Disability Business" had an interesting discussion on this topic.
You may also want to try the DS-HUM home page on the website of the
American Studies Crossroads Project where you should find some useful
syllabi. I believe that the website can be found at:
