ADVANCE NOTICE FOR THE 15TH AUSTRALIAN GEOLOGICAL CONVENTION
to be held in Sydney, 3-7 July 2000, with pre and post conference
activities, one of which includes the Summer Olympics to be held the
following September.
A cordial invitation is issued to all interested earth scientists to come
down under to Sydney for 5 days of absorbing geology.

For the interest of users of this mailbase, there will be several topics
on tectonics and structure at all scales. These include:
1. defining Australia- the nature of the plate, its margins and features of
the continent and its mantle
2. plate margin and intraplate processes, focusing on construction of
continental crust in the SW Pacific and SE Asia --convergent procresses,
intraplate processes, modelling, modern plate margins
3. orogenic belts as records of past processes - ductile and brittle
deformation, rates of mountain buliding, syntheses of orogenic belts
4. Precambrian supercontinents, sponsored by IGCP 440
5. Evolution of the Tasmanides
6. Pacific connections of east Gondwana, sponsored by IGCP 436
7. The Ron Vernon symposium on microstructural, metamorphic, igneous and
magma emplacement processess (Scott Johnson will be putting out a special
notice on this)
