Hello one and all!
I forwarded the recent discussion regarding treated leather to a friend of
mine who is greatly interested in the topic. Here is what he had to say, and
wanted me to post his remarks for the rest of the group to view.
Thomas Hulit, PhD Candidate at the University of Durham wrote:
Thanks for sending me the note on the leather! I am suprised at the fact
that they found evidence for crome tanned leather. I was under the
impression that didn't start until only a few hundred years ago. Off the
top of my head there are a couple of sources you might want to send on to
the discussion group. I don't have the dates of publication at hand, but
one particularily good book is called:
The History of Technology, and it has a big section on leather by J.W.
Waterer.
As well, an internet or library search should bring up more by him as well
(I've looked at a two or three books of his). It would be best to suggest
to the discussion group that they find the most recent version of the
History of Technology, as the version I have is a bit dated, and they revise
it periodically. I also know that conservators have to deal with leather
fairly often, and they have technical texts dealing with tanning and
conservation.
