hello Harry Kenward
i was a fan of your work, and in France we try to begin archéoentomologicals
works in the same way as you and alan Hall, whith V. Matterne a carpologue .
i must send you a letter to explain what we are doing ... but time flies ...
Ok for présence of donkey, it seems to me that without donkey ( i mean not
before VIIIe or IXe century) it is difficult to have mules in large number
(military transfert in large number can be a contrary example but need to be
proved). In france for the north we do not have donkey in rural site before
VIIIe century. and at this begining it is présent in only 15% of the sites.
Then the big problème is : how can we make the distinction between horses
and mules (as says sabine deschler in a forward message). the two are of same
stature and even spécialist of equids like Vera Eisenmann in Muséum in Paris
cannot give us good criterion. It is difficult for me to read german language
but J. Peters (munich) had writted something on the subject.
Someone can say more ?
JH Yvinec
