Dear All.
I have a request for UK entemologists, on behalf of a colleague
here at English Nature. Archaeozoological records are potentially
useful in elucidating species histories (e.g. native or introduced?)
from a conservation perspective. One species that needs
clarification is the dark honey bee Apis mellifera. It is not currently
protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
I've been asked the following questions:
Does anyone know of any records of A. mellifera from
archaeological sites in the UK?
Are any older than the early Mediaeval period? does the first domestication appear?
Any help with answering these questions would be very well
received.
Many thanks
