RESEARCH ASSOCIATE: IMPLEMENTING AUTOMATED RAILWAY TIMETABLING GENERATION
SOFTWARE
Minimum one year contract starting late Summer 2000 - salary c.£16k (to be
agreed)
Based within Loughborough University's Transport Studies Group in the
Department of Civil & Building Engineering.
Railtrack plc is the client.
Railtrack plc has developed a 'state of the art' automated timetable
generation tool known as PTG, that aims to produce workable timetables from
basic train schedule data and a set of business requirements. The
successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with this tool
'hands on' and with users and potential users within Railtrack to exploit
its current capabilities.
Responsibilities will include:
· To work with Railtrack - following appropriate training - to devise, set
up, run and analyse a range of benchmark tests and solve 'live' timetabling
problems
· To help develop the user community's skill levels by providing a user
support capability, to ensure that as far as practicable Railtrack
personnel are able to successfully use PTG themselves, working 'on site' as
required
· To document all use of PTG across Railtrack and to assess the level of
success achieved in using PTG
· To produce a process map that sets out where and when PTG can be used and
procedures on the use of PTG
· To provide advice on priorities for enhancements that need to be made to
PTG.
The deliverables are:
· The satisfactory solution of 'live' timetabling problems using PTG
· Development, documentation and transfer of skills in the use of PTG to
appropriate Railtrack personnel
· Growing understanding within Railtrack of where PTG is of use and a
growing confidence in using PTG by Railtrack personnel.
· Progress reports to Railtrack throughout the year and a final report that
sets out the processes and procedures that should be adopted, lessons
learnt and recommendations for further action.
We are looking for a person with:
· A good first degree and ideally a post-graduate qualification
· Excellent computer literacy and ideally some experience of scheduling
systems (which could be in other modes of transport, manufacturing, etc.)
· Good analytical skills, with the ability to understand business
requirements rapidly
· Knowledge of timetabling/scheduling processes and/or understanding of how
heuristics can be used to produce solutions to timetabling/scheduling
problems and/or knowledge of the rail industry
· Ability to work with people, be persuasive and determined.
Robert Watson - Lecturer in Rail Transport - will be managing this research
contract and questions/expressions of interest should be addressed to him
