Loughborough University Transport Studies Group
RESEARCH ASSOCIATE
SCHEDULING IN THE TRANSPORT INDUSTRY:
DEVELOPMENT OF A SET OF OBJECTIVES FOR RAILWAY TIMETABLES
Closing Date: 26th January 2001
15 month contract to work on EPSRC funded research.
Software is being developed that has the potential to radically improve the
railway timetable development process, by speeding it up and by potentially
enabling a better quality output to be produced. This software relies
heavily on the inclusion of appropriate objectives, which have hitherto
never been formally documented (examples of objectives that need to be
included are 'clock face' departure - leaving on the hour, 'regular
interval' - e.g. every 15 minutes, maximum journey times - e.g. 2 hours to
York, and performance targets).
Through semi-structured interviews with key players within the rail
industry and a small number of in-depth case studies, this research will
produce a full set of objectives that should be taken into account and will
provide guidance on the trade-offs that are made between these objectives.
The person we are looking for will ideally have:
· a good first degree and possibly a relevant post-graduate qualification;
· some interest in, knowledge of and insight into scheduling in any
situation (this could for instance be in a manufacturing or supply chain
context);
· experience of undertaking semi-structured interviews.
The successful applicant will become part of the Transport Studies Group at
Loughborough University. The Transport Studies Group undertakes a variety
of research focused on transport systems and transport management.
The principal investigator for this research is Robert Watson, whose
primary research interest is the improvement of railway scheduling
processes and systems.
