Hi.
My professional business advice would be for the staff member to sue this
student for slander/liable and damages (which should include potential loss
of earnings due to negative publicity adversely affecting their
promotion/advancement prospects).
The staff member must take a positive and assertive stance, not allow
themselves to be beaten into the ground. Offense is the only real form of
defense in these situations, anything else is seen as a sign of weakness.
I realize that this is a hard and difficult time, but the damage is already
done as far as privacy is concerned.
Also try to make it a teaching issue, involve as many other people/bodies
in this as possible. Get the specialist education media in as well. Show
how dangerous a precedent this could be, for all teaching staff, not just
this individual. What use is an education system where grades are obtained
by degree of threat rather than by academic ability?
And if you think I am spouting off, I am fighting two IP cases at the
moment. One of which is likely to disclose my background internationally to
the business world within the next few months.
Best wishes,
Susan.
