Dear All,
>From reading over a shoulder from another list I came across this reference
which I thought might be of interest to this list. Has anyone read / have
access to it?

"Implementing Psychiatry as Risk Management: DSM-IV as a Postmodern
Taxonomy", Health Risk & Society, 1 (2) p.167-178. By Colin Holmes & Philip
Warelow.
This paper suggest that the DSM-IV psychiatrises a vast amount of socially
constructed problems &, consequently, virtually invalidates the term
'mental disorder'. By doing so, however, it increases its potential as an
implement of social control by casting its net over virtually the whole
population.
They believe that the DSM-IV has "become a (postmodern) tool for the
management of risk". As a diagnostic manual, though "it leaves much to be
desired".

Best wishes,
Susan.
