Dear List
After embracing wholeheartedly the Sparks sciart element of the festival, committing months of planning and spending over £10,000 of sponsors' money we sold only 40 tickets to our Stargazer event. The audience was made up mostly from complimentary ticket holders. Antarctica Stargazer with Beryl Bainbridge, Peter Evans and Andrew Sachs would have packed houses I'm sure in a regional venue - just too much competition in London. The BA did well with pre-event media coverage and hot ticket offers but that still didn't get the punters in. As for media - couldn't get arts media interested because of the science element - couldn't get science media interested because of the arts element. Although full marks to Christine McGourty for covering our British Antarctic Survey/theatre group event on R4 PM programme. A long way to go yet to bridge the gap I think. Was it worth it? Next stop BAYS day. Full evaluation wash up to come! Getting the tissues ready to mop up the tears.
