Susanna,
We have a particular concern about removal of hexactinellid sponges from
sponge bioherms in Hecate Strait which date bact some 9000 years. These
are the first such bioherms described from extant seas although they are
well known in the fossil record. There is strong evidence (parallel
equidistant lines & clear habitat destruction) that otter board trawls have
fished over some bioherms. I have been working for the Pacific Geoscience
Centre on this and the contact person there is Kim Conway

Subject: Sponge Bycatch
Hello,
I am a graduate student interested in the rates of sponge bycatch from
various fisheries throughout the world. I would like to get any information
possible, and opinions are welcomed as well on the removal of sponges (any
species) from fishing grounds. I have received information from fishers and
fisheries scientists but would like to know what sponge researchers think
and if any data is available.
If any one would like more details on my thesis, please feel free to contact
me, off- list.
Thanks, Susanna
