Hugh's posting of South American poetry has reminded me of
another excellent poet, Roberto Juarroz. The translations I have
are by W.S. Merwin (North Point Press, ISBN 0865473072),
although there are others available.
I don't know whether everything is god.
I don't know whether anything is god.
But every word names god:
shoe, strike, heart, collective.
And what's more,
burnt-down collective,
old shoe,
general strike,
heart beside ruins.
And furthermore
collective with no one there,
shoe with no sole,
general strike of the dead,
heart in the ruins of the air.
And still furthermore
motionless collective for gods,
shoe for walking through the words,
strike of the dead in worn-out clothes,
heart with the blood of the ruins.
And furthermore.
But never mind.
I've stopped praying.
I'm going looking for the back of god.
I'm still unsure of the copyright issue here . . . however, due to this
thread I've just placed an order via Amazon for both Weldon Kees
and Jean Garrigue . . . . .
