Design (Plus) Research
International confererence

Politecnico di Milano, May 18-20, 2000

Organized by the PhD Programme in Industrial Design at Politecnico di
Milano, Italy

"Supported by the European Commission, Research DG, Human Potential
Programme, High Level Scientific Conferences"

Towards a culture of research in industrial design

The Ph.D. programme in Industrial Design at Politecnico di Milano
welcomes the participants to the international symposium on the
nature, models and cultures of research as taking shape within the
boundaries of the disciplines of industrial design, ranging from
product design to visual design up to communication design, even
extending to the new areas of design of interfaces and services.

The variety of orientations and experiences that are emerging at
present from the international debate about the topic are a challenge
for a symposium aspiring to offer to such an emergence not a series
of status reports but a common ground - not necessarily a unit of
ideas, rather a shared focus - for a culture of industrial design
research.

The nature and purpose of industrial design research; industrial
design research compared with other fields of research; methods and
resources involved; new knowledge and skills generated; the critical
reflection on the dimensions of historical, theoretical and
empirical/experimental research in industrial design; industrial
design research as the condition for disciplinary knowledge; the
uncodified practices of industrial design research as well as the
models of structured research are just some of the issues which will
be debated during the three days conference works.

Resulting from an enlarged, active participation to the international
call-for-papers launched for the conference, contributes to be
presented at the conference are representatives of a large number of
cultural and geographical contexts.
