Glasgow School of Art invites applications for the following PhD
Studentships:
1. The development, application and evaluation of advanced digital
visualisation techniques in research and development processes. Research
will focus on the development, application, evaluation of new tools and
working methodologies in support of a more rapid and responsive relationship
between R&D and leading edge design processes.
2. The development, application and evaluation of advanced digital
visualisation techniques in the assessment and evaluation of scientific
patents. Research will focus on the development, application and evaluation
of new tools and working methodologies in support of the production,
assessment and evaluation of scientific patents.
3. Inclusive Design. Research is encouraged which will promote an ‘inclusive
’ or ‘design for all’ approach by defining generic design methodologies and
developing suitable design aids and design guidance for the many designers
for whom ‘design for all’ will represent a radical shift in design practice.
Applicants should have a thorough understanding of designers’ needs, the
design process, and human factors considerations.
4. The Exploratory use of Rapid Prototyping in Products. The objectives are
to explore the interaction between Rapid Prototyping and the Design Process,
and to advance existing technology to enhance its application by designers.
Research will be carried out in association with the PDE Department at GSA
and the Rapid Design and Manufacture Centre at the University of
Strathclyde. The successful candidate will be a Design/Engineering graduate,
conversant with CAD (Solidworks).
5. Genetic Algorithms in Art and Architecture. The objectives are to examine
the theoretical foundation for GA and assess their potential benefit for
artists and architects, and to investigate the role of CAAD in generating
new images/designs from pre-existing ones, and examine the selection process
involved.
6. Textiles in British Art Education c1930/1970. This research project will
exploit Glasgow School of Art’s rich institutional archive and textile
collections. A key objective will be to analyse the development, promotion
and impact of the Needlework Development Scheme (1934-61).
