I'm very interested in Glenn's observation about the seemingly
diminishing skills of visualization and form-giving in design education.
This concerns me a great deal. If doctoral education turns design
education into yet another theoretical subject in the university
curriculum, we will have failed tragically, I think, in our efforts to
advance the understanding and practice of design. Fortunately, it need
not be a simple opposition of "texts" and "making." Wise teachers will
find the balance that moves us from simple training programs--which are
too common in our field--to sophisticated respect for the distinctive
abilities of designers to give intelligent and emotionally intense form
to experience.
Just a thought.
