Dear Keith,
I was amazed to discover, over the years, how common smoking
appears
to have been in coal mines post-1947.For a few examples, smoking was allowed
at:-
Beech Tree Colliery in the 1950's(Nr. Halesowen)
Bayton Colliery 1947-50 (N.Worcs)
Wolmet Colliery in the Lothians
Kames Colliery in Ayrshire-it was a match which caused an explosion
here in
1957 killing 17 men and led to the banning of all naked lights in coal
mines,tho'
miners in the Forest of Dean used carbide lamps at times at least into
the 70's.
Research would probably uncover some interesting information, especially
with
respect to Scotland.
