was the term used - & historically so as well - this also applies to the
Welsh slate quarries. However, coal, copper & of course quite a few other
minerals are open cast worked, so are they mines or quarries???!!!! I am sure

Let's see: We mine coal, salt, guano, potash, nitrates, sulphur, asphalt,
limestone, peat and silica from pits, shafts and quarries. We also pump
some of these out of the ground. They are neither concentrated or smelted
or chemically altered before they are put to beneficial use. Now lets split
hairs, if it is pumped out of the ground and refined before use is it mining
or something else?
