Going through my Dad's papers I note that in 1942 He received a
Certificate of Qualification of Fireman, Examiner or Deputy under
Section 15 (1)(b) of the Coal Mines Act of 1911, initially providing
that he could test for gas, air and that he had good hearing. This
was issued by Northumberland County. This was followed in 1944, when
he was an Assistant Overman, by a second Certificate under sections
14, 15, 49, 50, 51, 52, 61, 63, 64, 65 and 67 of the Act appointing
him as a Fireman, Examiner or Deputy and Shotfirer to "have and use
detonators which are to be carried in box No. . . . ." and which he
had to sign and acknowledge receipt of detonator box and key numbered
. . . . This was issued by Ashington Colliery.
Apropos an earlier topic I was asked about remembering clog dancing
with swords at Seghill and have unfortunately lost the e-mail. I had
actually forgotten most of my time at Seghill but about 3 weeks ago a
troupe of "percussion dancers" came through Rolla, and as part of
their repertoir (mainly Celtic and with some native American)
included a "sword dance from the miners of Northumberland" and lo all
the memories came back.
