The Institute for Cultural Research
Lecturer a/b in Culture, Media and Communication
Reference: A341
Closing date Friday 12 May 2000
The Institute for Cultural Research (ICR)
The Institute for Cultural Research was founded in 1996 as a means of
enhancing, co-ordinating and promoting interdisciplinary research on culture in
Lancaster. This atmosphere is highly valued within the University and genuinely
admired outside Lancaster where it is recognised to be one of the factors which
contributes to the University's overall strength in teaching and research.
Cultural research in the Institute addresses contemporary culture, media and
communications as well as cultural history, consumption and the culture of
science from the standpoint of cultural theory. It attends to the changing
nature of contemporary life, to contemporary culture's representation of
itself, to its different social and spatial scales, from the local to the
global, and to its media technologies. It concerns itself with the everyday,
with experience, and with cultural texts and their uses. These interests are
reflected in the ICR's journal Cultural Values, published quarterly by
Blackwell.
>From September 2000, the ICR will also be running the University's highly
successful BA (Hons) in Culture, Media and Communication. This is in addition
to its PhD programme in Cultural Research and its two MAs in Cultural Studies
and Visual Culture. This is an exciting and significant development in the
study of Culture at Lancaster, and the new appointment will be at the very
centre of our activities, helping us to sustain and enhance the ICR's
international reputation in this area.
The ICR wants to appoint an ambitious, energetic and experienced lecturer to
become part of the core team of researchers and teachers in the ICR's
undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The ICR is noted for its
collaborative, interdisciplinary research culture and you will be expected to
work alongside members of the ICR in other departments such as Women's Studies,
Sociology, Politics, Linguistics, Religious Studies, Theatre Studies, History
and American Studies.
You should have a doctorate in an area related to cultural research and be an
active researcher with a record of publications in a specialist field within
culture, media and communication. You should have at least one year's teaching
experience in an institution of Higher Education. While the post is not
restricted to any specific area of research expertise, we are particularly
interested in candidates who specialise in new media and technology or film,
television and radio.
Your principal responsibilities in the ICR will be:
to contribute to the dynamic research culture of the ICR, forging new research
initiatives, and to collaborate with members of the ICR in other departments;
to generate external funding and research grants;
to supervise PhDs;
to convene, shape and develop the MA in Cultural Studies and teach one of its
core courses;
to convene and teach one undergraduate core course (initially this will be the
third year course on the theory and practice of cultural research);
to provide sabbatical cover on other courses when necessary;
to take on a share of those administrative duties necessary to the running of
the Institute.
You will also be an active participant in the ICR's ongoing programme of public
events, lectures, conferences, colloquia and seminar series.
Salary for Lecturer A/B: ?17,238 - ?30,065
