Please visit us at http://www.noah-health.org
NOAH is a consumer health website which seeks to provide, in English and
in Spanish, high quality full-text health information for consumers that
is accurate, timely, relevant and unbiased.
NOAH's growing list of topics currently include Pregnancy, Evidence-based
Medicine for Consumers, Aging and Alzheimer's Disease, Neurological and
Neuromuscular Disorders, Cancer, The Eye and Low Vision, Dentistry,

Medlibbers,
I jumped the gun at sending that message regarding the change in NOAH's
address. It will not take effect until next week. Please continue to use
the old address until that time.
Sorry about the confusion. My bad.
Marie

Below, is the URL for the searchable MEDLIB-L archives.
I find it works best with "simple" little phrases.

I offered Descartes a cup of tea.

Subject: Talk on New Advances in Medicine
One of my physicians has been asked to give a talk on "new advances in
medicine" to the public. Needless to say this is an overwhelming topic to
cover in a hour! He would like an article or two that gives the "new
directions in medicine". He thought he'd concentrate on diabetes,
osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and diseases of aging. I seem to
remember seeing a journal article that gave a quick paragraph of the most
important advances in the year in each clinical area but can't seem to
locate it. I thought the listserv with its great collective mind and
memory might be able to suggest how I can gather information for him.
Any suggestions, folks? Joy

Subject: The Wrong Professional for the Job
This letter appeared on p. 8 of the September 11, 2000, issue of the New
Yorker:
So journalists at ABC are dismayed that a lawyer with no journalistic
experience was put in charge of the news division ("Bad News," by Jane
Mayer, August 14th)? The same thing has happened in the healthcare,
education and insurance fields, and even in such traditionally
public-sector institutions as libraries and prisons. In the name of the
bottom line, "managers" with M.B.A.Us and law degrees have been brought in
to supervise professionals who may know the right way to do a job, but not
the most profitable. This trend will continue until we realize that not
everything has its price; professional integrity certainly shouldnUt.

Subject: ref?:
Another reference question!
I have been helping a physician who is in a graduate program in Public
Health do his homework. Hey, it pays the bills.
He was looking for outcomes for violence prevention programs
specifically in Chicago; in other words, what is the evidence that money
poured into violence prevention programs works or doesn't work. Some
sort of report with statistics on this type of thing. I found public
health statistics, and even cool reports from the Chicago Police
Department home page which gave raw data on homicides, violent crimes,
etc etc BUT nothing to indicate what the result of prevention efforts
are...
Now I know there has got to be government research going on on the
local, state, and federal level on this stuff; otherwise governments
wouldn't be just pouring money into these programs. A social worker
acquaintance says that the State of Wisconsin has ton of research
reports that people in other states don't have access to. This seems
like a waste of resources not to have collaboration...
Does the average person like you and me have access to these reports?
If so, how ? I haven't checked the GPO database or the Illinois
government publications... but Im wondering how to go about finding
this stuff and if its even possible.

Delurking here - try the National Criminal Justice Reference System
website
or www.ncjrs.org. That is the Dept. of Justice's website with both
bibliographic and statistical references.
