Our policy is currently to ban the use of mobile phones within the library,
because of the noise nuisance.
However, if the latest generation of mobiles includes internet access, then
we can see that people will have legitimate reasons for using them in the
library - Wireless transactions between a library and its users will become
more and more commonplace, I feel sure, over the coming years.
No doubt it'll be a year or two before large numbers of people have such
wonders in their pockets, but we can already see that a complete ban on them
is not a policy that will last for long. I guess we'll have to concentrate
on what they are being used for, rather than trying to keep them out
altogether.

Not to mention the fact that it would be a great way to keep
patrons out
of the library. Handy if you're too busy but possibly not a
good move if
you're trying to wean people out of computer labs and
Internet cafes and
back into the library to do their research.
