THE INSEMINATORS
Sunday 15.10.00 at 22.30
Spain/USA, 95mins, 16mm, Dir/Scr. Naomi Turner, Prod. Jeff Vanderwolk
Principal Cast: Paula Klein, Lola Flores, Torero Chino
The Inseminators addresses the topical issue of genetic engineering and
eugenics in a new and imaginative way, using the Biblical tale of Mary and
Joseph. Maria, an intelligent young woman, desperately wants a baby, but her
carpenter husband Joseph has an abnormally low sperm count, a low IQ, and is
a lousy carpenter to boot. She is visited by the angel Gabriel, who appears
as representative of the Institute For Germinal Choice. He persuades her to
visit the clinic, where she is held against her will. The eugenics
enthusiasts intend to inseminate her with the sperm of intelligent men, so
that she will breed superior children.
Just as it seems all is lost, Maria¹s lesbian guardian angel arrives,
chiding her for not using her intelligence to extricate herself from her
prison, and together the women plan an elaborate escape.
SOBREVIVIRE (I WILL SURVIVE)
Monday 16.10.00 at 18.00
Spain, 106 mins, 35mm, Dir. Alfonso Albacete, David Menkes Prod. Francisco
Ramos
Principal Cast: Emma Suárez, Juan Diego Botta, Mirtha Ibarra
A character-driven Spanish drama concerning a woman and the two men in her
life, I Will Survive tells the story of Marga, a young woman played by the
award-winning Emma Suarez. Struggling with maternity, friendship and love,
Marga is an ordinary girl who becomes, in the eyes of the viewer during the
course of the film, exceptional.
Through the trials she endures, Marga learns that depression is not the
opposite of happiness, but rather acceptance that a life which is not
perfect can still be worthwhile. Told in flashback, narration and present
action, I Will Survive is a life-affirming film emphasising the essential
resilience of the human spirit.
EL ARTE DE MORIR (THE ART OF DYING)
Tuesday 17.10.00 at 20.00
Spain, 102mins, 35mm, Dir. Álvaro Fernández Armero, Prod. Francisco Ramos
Principal Cast: Fele Martinez, Maria Esteve, Gustavo Salmerón, Lucia Jiménez
Six young friends struggle to escape the past in this dark thriller from
Alvaro Fernández Armero. Four years earlier, at a drunken party they refuse
to speak of, all were involved in the death of Nacho (Gustavo Salmeron), a
promising young artist. Scared of the consequences, they swore an oath of
secrecy and buried the body. Nacho was declared missing, but now the police
have unearthed some new evidence, and are re-investigating the crime.
As the friends are forced to face what they have done, the past begins to
revenge itself on each of them. When members of the six begin to die in
mysterious circumstances, Ivan (Fele Martinez) and Clara (Maria Esteve) try
to make sense of the horror surrounding them before it is too late. They
find help in the most unlikely of quarters from Nacho himself.
MUJER MAS FEA DEL MUNDO (THE UGLIEST WOMAN IN THE WORLD)
Saturday 21.10.00 at 14.00
Spain, 108mins, 35mm, Dir. Miguel Bardem Prod. Francisco Ramos
Principal Cast: Elia Galera, Roberto Álvarez, Héctor Alterio, Alberto San
Juan
Set ten years in the future, La Mujer Mas Fea Del Mundo tells the story of
Lola Otero, the ugliest woman in the world, taunted throughout her infancy
and childhood for her physical deformities, and nicknamed ŒThe Malaysian
Foetus¹. Years later, a newly discovered medication has reversed her looks,
transforming her into a vision of loveliness. Seductive and desired, Lola
has a new name ŒThe Beauty Otero¹. Although her face has healed, Lola¹s
mental scars remain, and she must return to the doctor each week or risk a
reversal to her former hideousness.
Maddened by rejection and cruelty, Lola has become a killer, beautiful,
deadly and determined to destroy those who take their beauty for granted.
She targets ex-Miss Spains as an act of revenge against the beauty queen who
stole her lover. As the Miss Spain Pageant 2011 approaches, it is left to
Lt. Arribas, a man with his own deformities who feels a strange affinity
with Lola, to uncover her plan and stop her before she destroys another
life.
