EVENTS at the CANNING HOUSE LIBRARY:
12 July 6.30 pm Lecture: The Alhambra
by Michael Jacobs
To coincide with the publication of his two most recent books, Alhambra and
In the Glow of the Phantom Palace: Travels from Granada to Timbuktu, the
hispanist and travel-writer Michael Jacobs takes a fresh look at one of the
world's most visited but least understood sites. His talk, accompanied by
slides by the renowned Granadan photographer Francisco Fernandez, will
attempt to disentangle our relatively slender factual knowledge of the
Alhambra from the huge mythology that has grown up around it since the
collapse of Nasrid Spain in 1492. As well as assessing the romantic
distortions of the monument perpetuated by foreign travellers such as
Washington Irving and Theophile Gautier, Jacobs will also consider the no
less sentimental and misleading attitudes towards it as expressed by
Spaniards such as Zorrilla, Garcia Lorca and Manuel de Falla.
Followed by a reception ?5 members. ?6 non-members, ?3 students
