Stephanae -
I am generally a lurker and I wasn't going to add my introduction in, but
now I feel I had to respond.
First - no one is "only" a mother - parenting is one of the most important
careers in the world, particularly at this time in history.
Second - I also understand the issue of the feeling of atrophy. I too felt
the same way, as do my sister and mother. I think the answer is to jump
right in with both feet. Easier said than done, but I am hoping this list
will help.
So, in light here is to Stephanae's brave career choice (you know how brave
if you have children!), here is my own introduction.
I am Kim Klimek, generally a square peg trying to fit into round holes. I
have a BA in Euro history, an MA in medieval history and women's studies,
and am searching for the elusive PhD. I have been out of school for 5 years,
long enough to be considered "non-trad". I teach Western Civ and Medieval
History at Metro State College in downtown Denver, and not only do I love
it, I'm good at it. (It is getting easier to say that; I'm sure many of us
know how difficult it is to say positive things about ourselves without
feeling too egotistical!) I want and need the PhD, but can't seem to get
into a program, mostly I don't "fit".
I study women's mysticism and spirituality in 12th and 13th century Europe,
particularly Germany, but I am highly interested in Byzantine and Russian
studies in this area (anyone else?). I also look at education and patronage,
both in earlier and later periods. I was so happy to see other like-minded
medievalists! I am a loner here in Colorado. I had wonderful support at Colo
State in Dr Harry Rosenberg, I'm afraid he spoiled me rotten with his belief
in me.
I am so excited for the group - and all the wonderful diversity of people
here.
I would add, for people wanting responses off-list, could you please leave
your email address at the bottom of your request?
Thanks
Kim Klimek
