I don't know if anyone else has suggested this but we have a hyperlink field
in our SMR Access 97 database which is really useful for linking to all
sorts of things - images, reports, surveys etc. It doesn't matter what size
or type the linked files are. We also have thumbnail images in the database
but these are deliberately kept small.
We also have images held on Photo CD but these are not convenient for
including in the deatabase directly - for these we just have an index. You
really need to store things on a hard disk.
Hope this helps.

Subject: Photographs in databases
Dear members
The Forest of Dean Local History Society is developing a sites and monuments
database. We hope to have a collection of digital photographs relating to
the monuments which will be stored on CDRom(s).
We are using Access and ideally would like to incorporate the photos into
the database so that users can view images relating to a particular record.
In an early attempt we used an embedded field with a link to an image file,
using linking rather than embedding in an effort to reduce the memory
requirements of the database. However Access seemed to reserve as much
memory as would be required by the image file so that there was no actual
reduction in memory requirements. We also have the situation that there
could be several images relating to one monument (as well as vice versa).
What would be most suitable would be for users, having chosen a monument to
be able to select from a list of images that could be displayed.
I imagine that a table of photographs linked throught a junction table would
enable us to access these images.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how this sort of aim may be achieved?
If the Photographs are kept on a CDRom how do we enter the path in the
database, presuming that the CDRom drive may have a different drive letter
with different computers?
