Re: discussion of the data structure required for time periods, it occurs to
me that a time period as we are discussing is in some ways like the
discussion of 'what is a monument' ie it is a retrospectively defined
intellectual construct which has many attributes (space it relates to,
sources of information that help to define it, relationship to other terms
etc) all of which may be re-interpreted over time whereas an historical
event as suggested by Jeremy and referred to by Duncan is more objective,
fixed and definite (subject to correct analysis of the available data) much
like the discussion of 'what is an archaeological event' that has been going
on in the U.K. sites amd monuments record community in the last couple of
years.
