List members will recall that during the Spring we held a very successful
e-conference 'A Chronology for the United Kingdom' to develop a terminology
for chronological indexing, resulting in the development of the alpha
version of the Timelines Thesaurus from the English Heritage Data Services
Unit.
During the Summer, a beta version has been prepared. Members of this list
are invited to review the thesaurus online and send comments to help us
finalise the thesaurus content and presentation. The beta version of the
thesaurus can be browsed at the 'thesauri under construction' pages of the
NMR at the url below (see notes).
Informal comments are welcome (off-list please to [log in to unmask]).
However, if you wish to participate formally in the digital peer-review, you
will need to retrieve two additional documents from the archive for this
list: the thesaurus introduction, and a review questionnaire. The command
for doing this is as follows:
In the body text of a new message addressed to [log in to unmask] put
the following lines as the only text
get mime fishen timelinesintro.rtf
get fishen question.txt
stop
You will receive the Introductory chapter as an attachment. The introductory
chapter has been saved as an .rtf file which should work with most
word-processors. The review questionnaire is will arrive as an email that
can be updated with your comments and emailed to me at
[log in to unmask]
All completed review questionnaires received by November 10th 2000 will be
acknowledged in the final version of the thesaurus.
Following on from the review, FISHEN will be determining acceptance of the
Timelines thesaurus as a national standard at the end of November.
Best wishes

Notes:-
1) The Timelines thesaurus can be browsed at
http://www.rchme.gov.uk/thesaurus/construction.htm
(you will also find additional thesauri under development there
which will be the subject of future peer reviews).
2) There is a known bug with the online version affecting the
alphabetical browsing of terms. The index file for letter 'R' is incorrect,
and clicking on it returns terms from the wrong thesaurus. A fix is planned
for future releases.
3) The current version of the alphabetical browsing does not support
finding terms beginning with numbers, e.g. 1ST CENTURY. A fix is planned for
future releases.
4) Please feel free to copy this invitation to colleagues. If they are
not members of fishen, they will need to join the fishen email discussion
group by sending the following command as the only text of an email message
to [log in to unmask]
join fishen [Full name]
stop
replacing [Full name] with their name.
5) If you missed the conference, remember that you can review the
archive of messages sent in January to May at
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/fishen/archive.html
