JMC,
Mondrian sought to attain absolute flatness for the image in his mature
works. Not of the physical-image, which in some later Neo-plastic works
became an almost 'tiled' surface of squares/rectangles, but in the image
that is constituted by the physical-image but as a separate aesthetic
thing from it.
Interestingly, he also said, allegedly, something along the lines that
*my painting is very fast*, which is a curious observation. I suppose the
thread I'm finding in this (and it relates to my own _Wonderland_
observation too) is that (certain) films can be read as non-film, and
likewise painting - as something seemingly at odds with its ambit
definitions as *static*.
Regards,
Rose.
