Dear Minnie and Chandrika,
I read your latest emails.
And I am clearer now about what you think.
I agree with a lot of things said in both emails.
Especially poignant and telling for people here in the
US academy from "third worlds", is the comment made by
Chandrika that how come "third world" scholarship on
euro-anglo-american stuff is marginalized, actually
not even permitted expression? There is a strong push
in the multiculti US academy to force "third world"
students to do only "third world" stuff, otherwise
they wouldn't get anywhere.
Because of the painful peculiarities of my own
academic/professional situation for close to ten years
now(on which I don't wish to elaborate now), I was
quick to jump on you guys (and Garewal's posting did
nothing to lessen my annoyance).
My response to Minnie's remarks was reductive (hers
was not elaborated either) and adding on Telugu, Tamil
etc is kinda mainstream but really it does not
substantially differ from just mentioning Tullu,
Konkani, etc.
Listen, you've brought up a lot of things, very
serious stuff, and I cannot contribute at the moment
in the just and compassionate manner that Chandrika
alluded to. But I do hope to engage in these
discussions with both of you at a later date.
By the way where are you two located? In my navigation
of the archives, I didn't come across any postings
from either of you...
Right now, I would die for hot idlis with chutney and
mullagai podi.
Cheers and all the best,
Hema
