I would be very careful about relating Aristotle's theory of catharsis
to Tarrantino's over-the-top violence. Good tragedy provides the
audience with the ability to experience a communal cleansing of the
soul, Tarratino is into sensationalism and extorting emotional
responses. There is a difference between theatre and cinema. Not
every feeling of being overwhelmed during a film is a cathartic
experience.

Every visible power is threatened, especially when it
rests on a usurpation that alienates both its victims
and its accomplices. Thus the detective's tactics are
those of the minister and the Chief of State. Power will
be shady or will not be at all. . .
