In _A History of Twentieth-Century Russia_, Robert Service writes, in the
mid-1980s Gorbachev "indicated that his urgent priority was to subject Russian
history to public reconsideration. Permission was given for the release of the
phantasmagoric film _Repentance_, whose Georgian director Tengiz Abuladze
satirized the Stalin years. . . . Gorbachev felt that until there was
comprehension of the past, little could be done by him in the present" (450).
