That's very nice. Presumably the people digging under
the house are actually looking for the bodies of the
missing kids and so the film then becomes a substitute
grave. A site of mourning which is particularly
poignant when Heather seems to realise this in her
monologue and apologies to the by now grieving
parents.
In the sense of the narrative I still would argue that
the reels are left to be discovered even if they are
buried. The way buried treasure is left to be
discovered.
