Thanks for the suggestion. I have come across Stanley Kwan's Yang and Ying.
He ostensibly 'came out' throught the making of the video. I think Kwan is
one of the very few HK directors who show sensitivity and understanding of
gender politics. Homosexuality is a sure way to challenge the patriarchal
structure. In terms of law, HK was brought in line with Britain in 1990, a
reflection of the recent and slow changes in attitude towards different
sexual orientations. I would classify attemps such as _A queer story_ and
_happy together_as tentative. Anyone knows of more recent films that deal
with homosexuality?
HK film industry is itself a manifestation of the traditional patriarchy.
Ann Hui, Clara Law and Mabel Cheung are/ were the only active women
directors. In terms of mainland Chinese and Taiwanese cinemas, I cannot
think of any. Please correct me! This absence must affect the industry's
ability to represent women's perspectives.
I am no expert on cross gender theatre/ cinema which has been a long Chinese
tradition. It will be another huge but worthwhile project. OH, I am
digressing a bit outside film philosophy. May get a slap from the Salon
hermano grande...
