Hello folks,
The discussion on humans as agents of extinction reminds me of some work I
was involved in a few decades ago on erosion control. An important question
was: What is Mother Nature's natural erosion rate and what is the change in
that rate attributable to human intervention. An important question because
natural erosion helps build soils downstream (Mississippi delta for example)
while the additional human caused erosion can decimate the soil fertility in
the upland areas with possible adverse effects downstream.
Is there something here that might help us understand the plant/animal
extinction issue? And global warming, etc.? And the ethical
responsibilities of the human animal?
Ray
