Subject: natural history and 19C parks
Dear all.
I am researching the influence the Victorian attitude to natural
science education had on the design of 19C public parks. Many had
geological formations on display, boulders from ice age etc. Also
plant and animal collections of the "exotic" nature. I am interested
in any references parks etc where natural history was displayed and
any examplesof remaining structures eg bear pits, aviaries, rock
formations .
I am particularly interested in how the definition of Natural History
has changed, considering the influence of sustainability, green
issues, Agenda 21 which is superimposing a natural look onto public
parks which were originally designed for a much more formal
landscape.
Thanks
Pam
