Co-ordinator of Environmental Education
The successful applicant to this post, at the level of a University
Assistant Lecturer, will work with teaching staff across
faculties and departments to develop educational materials and tools for
addressing a broad range of environmental issues.
These resources will be used both as part of existing degree courses,
and
as an addition to them, and will equip Cambridge
staff and graduates with a sound knowledge of human-environment
interactions and insights to problem solving.
The postholder will be expected to create awareness about, and an
interest
in, the delivery of sustainability learning resources
as part of the core curriculum of existing undergraduate and
postgraduate
courses, in conjunction with departments and
faculties in the University. He or she will also help to develop
cross-curricular material that is additional to the core
curriculum, but available to students throughout the university. It is
likely that the cross-curricular materials will involve
distance learning methods and materials, with a strong web-based
element,
but with some tutorial support sessions; with the
aim of building a suite of such materials that could eventually provide
a
qualification at a level comparable to a language
diploma or certificate. He or she will be expected to consult widely
with
students, academic staff and employers about the
nature of such material and the process of access and delivery. He or
she
will work to create awareness about the availability
of such resources, and to promote their accessibility, among the student
community, in conjunction with Colleges, the
Cambridge University Students Union (CUSU) and other student societies.
The postholder will develop resources that are appropriate to the needs
of
staff and students, as identified by the processes of
consultation outlined above. These resources should draw on existing
initiatives locally and internationally, but are expected to
involve substantial creative development on the part of the postholder.
He
or she will have the opportunity of working closely
with staff at the cutting edge of new learning methodologies, including
appropriate use of IT, distance and group learning
techniques.
The postholder will be appointed by the University's Committee for
Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies, and will be
responsible to it. The post will be based at the Department of
Geography. A sub-committee on environmental education will
provide support, and this group will represent different parts of the
University, especially the major academic Schools. The
postholder will work closely in conjunction with the Director of the
newly-established Centre for Applied Research in
Educational Technologies (CARET) which aims to focus on applied research
to develop, implement, and evaluate new
technologies in education. He or she will also need to work with all
those
offering existing courses and programmes on
environmental matters, including faculties and departments and the
Cambridge Programme for Industry.
The successful applicant will be a graduate with a broad knowledge of
environmental issues, a strong interest in
environmental education, and should be well versed in existing
initiatives
for developing environmental education in the
tertiary sector. The person must have excellent communication skills and
an enthusiasm for developing new resources and
materials to cater to a variety of needs. He or she must be a strongly
motivated self-starter who is also able to work well as
part of a team. He or she will need to show initiative, and be able to
work collaboratively across a wide range of faculties and
departments in the University. He or she will also need to have
excellent
IT skills and an enthusiasm for exploring the use of
new technologies for educational purposes.
The salary will be at the age-wage point on the unestablished Assistant
Lecturer scale, (£17,755 - £23,256). This is a fixed
term appointment which will be for three years in the first instance,
renewable for a further two years.
Applicants should include a recent CV, the names and addresses of three
referees, as well as a short outline of their views on
the opportunities and challenges presented by this post (no more than
one
side of A4). Applications should be submitted no
later than Friday 26 January 2001 to: Administrator, Committee for
Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies, Department of
Geography, Downing Place, Cambridge CB2 3EN .
