Subject: Internet and Environmental Education
Dear colleagues,
On November 6th, the Institute of Advanced Studies of the UNU, Iwate
Prefectural Government and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT)
are co-organising a panel discussion in Iwate on the theme of Environment -
Information - Education.
We will be talking about the Iwate Environment Network project which was
launched in September 1998 to promote the use of the Internet in
environmental education - please see the website:
http://www.ias.unu.edu/ecology.
In the run up to the panel discussion we are asking environmental experts
the following five questions.
(1) The Internet is here to stay. What do you think are the main strengths
of the Internet with regard to environmental education?
(2) What are the weaknesses of the Internet with respect to environmental
education? Are you concerned about the children confusing virtual and
reality? Is field based environmental education is superior to network
based?
(3) What are you most concerned about when you see children using the
Internet?
(4) How would you rate the learning effect of the Internet for children?
High, medium or low?
(5) How do you see environmental education changing in the future as a
result of the use of new information technologies like computers, multimedia
software and the Internet?
We would very much like to receive your answers (brief responses are fine)
by 23 October. We asking a lot of people around the world and in Japan the
same questions and we will use the answers to frame the discussion. For
instance, unattributed quotes will be introduced using PowerPoint during the
discussions.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely
Brendan Barrett
Fellow, UNU/IAS
