Research Assistant
The TEA (Transformation of Environmental Activism)
Project
The TEA Project is a major investigation, funded by the
EC (DG XII:Science, Research and Development), of the changing
character of environmental activism in eight European nations. Now
in its third year, and due for completion on 30.9.2001, the project
is coordinated by Mr C A Rootes, who is also directing that part of
the research concerned with the incidence and forms of environmental
protest action and environmental organisation activity in Britain.
The post is full time, but consideration will also be given
to applicants who would prefer a jobshare or a part-time appointment.
Duration: from 1.10.2000 (or as soon as possible
thereafter) until 30.9.2001.
Salary: lower part of scales IA/IB for Research Staff
(minimum 16,775).
Duties: The research assistant will be principally
responsible for conducting studies of environmental protest and
activism in two selected localities in England since c. 1986. In
addition to collecting and analysing published materials, the
research assistant will be responsible for interviewing observers
and informants as well as participants in local environmental
organisations and campaigns. The research assistant may also
be required to assist the project coordinator, Mr C A Rootes, with
the day to day administration of the project, including
communication with European partners and the EC, as well as
assisting with research on the European level and other aspects of
the British case.
* Good interview skills are essential.
* The ability to write clear, accurate accounts of research
findings under pressure of deadlines is essential.
* Skills in the analysis and presentation of quantitative
data using SPSS would be an advantage.
* A working knowledge of a western European language
other than English, although not essential, may be considered an
advantage.
The position will be based on the University of Kent at
Canterbury campus, but some travelling will be necessary in order to
conduct interviews and to collect material and possibly to assist
with meetings of the project group.
Starting date: as soon as possible on or after 1 October
2000.
