This is advance notice of a workshop offered here in the University of
Strathclyde, Glasgow (8th June 6pm) by Professor David Orr of Oberline
College in the States. The Workshop is being run as a part of the
Scottish
Natural Heritage programme 'Sharing Good Practice' and is sponsored by
the
Centre for Sustainable Community Development (CADISPA) at the Faculty of
Education. The Workshop, entitled 'Re-inventing Higher Education -
working
towards a Sustainable Future' is the third of a series of lectures given
by
David Orr whilst he is in Scotland. (6th June 'From the Bottom up...'
and
7th June 'Sustainability as a crisis of Mind' - both at SNH Battleby).
The
description offered for the Workshop reads as follows: ' In the past two
decades governments, corporations, utilities, farms and other
institutions
have undergone significant changes, in effect re-inventing themselves
for
radically different circumstances. Higher Education is now facing a
similar
challenge. It has served the processes of industrialisation well. But
what
does education mean relative to climate change, loss of biological
diversity, rising human populations and pollution? How can Higher
Education
be re-invented to serve an era of ecological healing, restoration and
the
transition to a sustainable future?' I first met David Orr during the
meetings of the PCSD (Presidents Council on Sustainable Development)
Task
Force 8, in the States. He has much to say in this important area.
Booking
and further detail for this event, and the whole of the SNH 'Sharing
Good
Practice' programme, can be obtained from Lorna Brown at SNH Battleby.
Her
number is 01738 - 444177. The cost for David Orr's session is 30pound
and
this will include a light supper. Geoff Fagan
