I agree with the conclusion that not wanting to change the code and
wanting a good speedup are contradictory aims. Another compiler which is
Linux SMP capable and that supports the usage of OpenMP
(http://www.openmp.org) parallelization directives is the PG F77
compiler (http://www.pgroup.com). It is a very nice compiler and has
autoparellization capabilities, though for good performance one needs to
insert explicit HPF or OpenMP directives.
Another compiler specifically made for shared-memory OpenMP
parallelization on Linux IA32 (x86) machines can be found here
http://www.kai.com/parallel/kappro/guide/.
These compilers are commercial and relatively expensive, but worth it if
one wants to utilize the dual box efficiently.
