New from West House Books
Johan de Wit HIPPOTOTESCOPO. 64pp typeset by Five Seasons Press. isbn 0
9531509 4 1. L6.95
This is the biggest-yet selection of Johan's poems-with-footnotes
(previous selections appeared from Microbrigade, Mainstream and Writers
Forum; there is no crossover): poems of twelve lines, seven words a
line, seven footnotes per poem. Robert Sheppard calls them 'a pure
poetry that is as solid as the world'; Peter Manson remarks that 'de
Wit's footnotes are the place where a poetry of statement, of the drive
towards explanation, confronts the material density of language - an
encounter more like sex than war'. To which I'll just add that they're
very damn FUNNY.
And the small format's designed to slip in your pocket so that you can
pull it out & cheer yourselves up when lost in the wilderness of another
mainsteam anthology (that was such a useful typo the other day, & I'll
continue to use it) or befuddled by the way us folk talk up north.
