Alan Halsey wrote: In prehistory there was an article in L=A=N=etc which
referred to John& Rod Mengham as 'Neo-Nietzscheans'. John lived in Brum
at the time & I remember him asking with that uniquely Wilkinson smile
whether I reckoned Brum was the best place for a Neo-Nietzschean to be. I
don't think even now I'd have a ready answer.
And now I too have the pleasure of living in a community of writers in or
close to Birmingham, having had the label of 'Huddersfield School' dangling
from my satchel on one occasion, and 'Bloodaxe' painted across my brow
like Adam Ant's war-paint on another. All very tiresome. Birmingham, like
any other city, gets by with barely a nod towards poetry or poets (some
good textual public art-works though). And Coventry now has some serious
claims to be recognised as something of a crucible. More important than
these (hazy) placings are the axes between writers created by lists like
these.
