DTU STATISTICIANS
Research Staff Grade 1B/A
(#16775 - #25213)
Two experienced and self-motivated medical statisticians are required to join
the Diabetes Trials Unit (DTU). One post relates primarily to the Early Diabetes
Intervention Trial (EDIT) with responsibility also for some short term clinical
studies and the other post relates primarily to the UK Prospective Diabetes Study
(UKPDS) with responsibility also for the DTU Biochemistry Laboratory.
EDIT is a six year, nine-centre, double blind, factorial design study of 631 subjects
at risk of diabetes. It seeks primarily to determine whether deterioration in glycaemic
tolerance can be delayed or prevented by antihyperglycaemic therapy using an
alphaglucosidase inhibitor or a biguanide. The post holder will carry out ongoing
validation of data, help monitor study progress, conduct planned analyses and assist
with the preparation, presentation and publication of results. The DTU undertakes a
wide range of short-term clinical studies examining potential new therapeutic agents
and devices. These studies, usually performed by research physicians and nurses,
require statistical support with their design, analysis and presentation and publication.
The UKPDS is a multi-centre prospective randomised clinical trial of therapies for
type 2 diabetes. This landmark study has followed 5102 subjects in 23 clinical centres
for up to 20 years with the major results published in 1998. A five-year post-study
monitoring programme commenced in October 1997 with all surviving patients being
followed on an annual basis. The post holder will conduct analyses and assist with
the preparation, presentation and publication of results. The DTU Laboratory performs
a wide range of specialist assays to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standard and
undertakes original research. The Laboratory performs over 150,000 measurements per
year, mostly for trials organised by the DTU but assays are performed also for various
NHS Trusts, external research groups and for some pharmaceutical companies.
A statistical degree is essential with a minimum of two years experience in medical
statistics, ideally in a clinical trial setting. A high level of computer literacy
and working experience of SAS and PC/MAC based packages in addition to good written
and oral communication skills are required. The post holder must be able to work
both as a member of a team and independently.
Please send a written application and curriculum vitae with names and addresses of
two referees to the Personnel Administrator, Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine,
(quoting reference H7/00/017), c/o Diabetes Research Laboratories, Radcliffe Infirmary,
Woodstock Road, Oxford OX2 6HE. The closing date for application is 20th September 2000
and interviews will take place on 4th October 2000.
